Nicholas French

Nicholas French was born in Wexford, Ireland, around 1604 and became a key founder of the Irish Catholic Confederation during the Irish Confederate Wars. He helped organise rebels into a cohesive political movement seeking religious freedom and self-government, later serving as Bishop of Ferns from 1645 until his death in 1678. His life bridged local Wexford identity and nationwide Catholic resistance, shaping Ireland’s mid-seventeenth-century struggle for legal equality and self-rule.
