Newtown Cross-roads

Situated on a gentle S-facing slope around Newtown crossroads. A planned plantation settlement is traditionally thought to have been established by Valentine Greatrakes (Smith 1746, 94). By 1641 the town had failed and the ruins of houses and a paved street are recorded in the Civil Survey (Simington 1942, 75). A church in ruins is marked on a Taylor and Skinner map at Newtown (1778, 163). Nothing is visible at ground level.
