Keogh was born in 1840 at Orchard House in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, where his family farmed barley and escaped the worst famine hunger. He left that small Irish town to fight for the Papal States, then joined the Union cavalry at Gettysburg, and finally commanded a troop under Custer until the Little Bighorn took him in 1876. His life moved from a Carlow farm to European and American wars, ending in a Montana river instead of a homecoming.
