Mound (Site of)

Barrow, unclassified

What is recorded here

Mound (Site of) is a barrow, unclassified in Carrickard, County Sligo, Ireland. Wood-Martin described a large pillar-stone on the summit of an earthen mound close to the church. The 1914 map marked the mound and stone in a field near the graveyard, though no visible remains survive today.
The site of a mound and 'Stuckerd (Pillar Stone)' (SL041-038005-) are indicated on the 1914 OS 6-inch map in a field c. 50m SE of a graveyard (SL041-038002-). There are no visible remains of the mound. Its association with a standing stone, however, would suggest a prehistoric monument, possibly a barrow. Wood-Martin (1883-4, 448) referred to the site of 'a large stuckerd, or pillar-stone, on the summit of an earthen mound' close to the church (SL041-038001-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
