Mound in Whigsborough

Situated on natural rock outcrop on the low-lying floodplains of a nearby river, originally located on a small island known as Castle Island or Lough Coura surrounded by wet marshy land. Little remains of the castle except for a piece of wall fragment and loosely scattered rubble. The building appears to be the remains of a circular tower (OF030-005001-) sitting directly on rock outcrop which along with the collpased rubble gives the appearance of a mound. A Neolithic passage tomb; dating to the 4th–3rd millennium BCE. Its location on a former island suggests ritual or strategic significance in the prehistoric landscape.
