Mound in Machaire Dromann (tc Fánaid Thuaidh)

Mound

What is recorded here

A subcircular area (DG011-051001-) enclosed by the much robbed remains of a stone wall which survives to a height of c. 0.7m. There is a mound in the centre which is difficult to interpret as being either natural or artificial. It is situated on a rock outcrop in marshy land 20m S of a river. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
A possible Neolithic or early Bronze Age burial mound, potentially associated with a ringed enclosure; its significance lies in its possible role as a ritual or funerary site, though its exact function and date remain uncertain due to poor preservation.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
