What is recorded here
Carrigeen is one of three mounds located in the W quadrant of an enclosure. A low oval mound, heavily overgrown with scrub at the time of inspection, it sits on a steep E-facing slope at the SE end of a small ridge. The other two mounds lie close to the first, and the whole group is subject to a preservation order under the National Monuments Acts. Whether the enclosure is a ringfort or prehistoric, the mounds may be natural or barrows, but they remain marked and protected.
On quite a steep E-facing slope at the SE end of a small N-S ridge, rising from a broad expanse of rolling and mostly reclaimed grassland. Very good views in all directions. One of three mounds located in the W quadrant of an enclosure (KK015-018001-). An oval mound (diam. 10m N-S; 7m E-W; H c. 1.2m) heavily overgrown with scrub at time of inspection. The other two mounds (KK015-018002-; KK015-018034-) lie c. 6m to the NW and W respectively. Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 273), mentions 'a low mound' in the interior, and rather fancifully describes it as 'probably the remains of an earthen citadel, but is now almost worn away by the tramping of cattle during the course of many centuries'. The date and function of these mounds is unknown. If the enclosing element is a ringfort then it is unlikely that the mounds are archaeological. However, if the enclosure is prehistoric in date, then it is possible that the mounds may be barrows.
