Carrigeen holds a 7m circular mound beneath a large sycamore, set on a steep east-facing slope above rolling Kilkenny grassland. It sits inside an ancient enclosure with two smaller oval companions, yet their true purpose remains unknown. Cattle may have worn away an earthen citadel, or the mounds may mark forgotten burials. The sycamore still drops shadows across the grass, keeping the mystery alive beneath its branches.
On quite a steep E-facing slope at the SE end of a small N-S ridge, rising from a broad expanse of rolling and mostly reclaimed grassland. Very good views in all directions. One of three mounds located in the W quadrant of an enclosure (KK015-018001-). A roughly circular mound (diam. 7m; H c. 0.3-0.5m), 11m E of the W bank of the enclosure, and has a large sycamore tree growing on top. There are two oval mounds (KK015-018003-; KK015-018004-) c. 4m to the S and SE respectively. Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 273), mentions 'a low mound' in the interior, and rather fancifully describes it as 'probably the remains of an earthen citadel, but is now almost worn away by the tramping of cattle during the course of many centuries'. The date and function of these mounds is unknown. If the enclosing element is a ringfort then it is unlikely that the mounds are archaeological. However, if the enclosure is prehistoric in date, then it is possible that the mounds may be barrows.
