Freestanding carved limestone monument, erected 1939. Comprising carved limestone figure of Irish Volunteer with rifle, set on truncated pyramidal pedestal on stepped granite base. Brass plaque with raised inscription to north elevation, carved plaques to east, south and west elevations, drinking fountains to north and south elevations, with Celtic interlace panels. Approached by steps from south. Set within public park with mild steel railings on moulded granite plinth.

This freestanding monument is the focal piece of Broadstone Park, laid out on the site of the infilled Broadstone Branch of the Royal Canal. It commemorates C Company, First Battalion of the Dublin Brigade of the Irish Volunteers who saw action during the Easter Rising (1916) and the War of Independence (1919-21). It was sculpted by Leo Broe, himself a member of the Irish Volunteers, who is best known for producing various monuments throughout Ireland commemorating Irish republicans. The upper section of the pedestal has three well-executed panels commemorating other important events in Irish history and mythology including the landing of the Milesians, Cúchulainn and the death of Brian Boru at Clontarf. The brass inscription in raised script and interlace panels appropriately draw on Celtic traditions.
