Monument in Coolbaun has a stepped base, an obelisk and a cross, while even its gateposts have stepped caps. It's the stone equivalent of a formal photograph where the two lads at the edges have quietly stood on boxes.

Freestanding limestone ashlar monument, dated 1921, comprising inscribed pedestal on a stepped base with chamfered necking supporting obelisk having cross finial. Road fronted with sections of iron railings on painted rendered plinth, iron gate, painted rendered panelled piers having stepped capping, and painted rendered boundary wall to enclosure.

Making an appealing, if subtle visual statement on the side of the road leading into Castlecomer from the north-east a monument commemorating the period of "The Troubles" (1916-21) displays particularly fine craftsmanship in locally-sourced County Kilkenny limestone.
