Monastery (in Ruins)

In pasture, on the S shore of Inishmore Island in Lough Arrow, within a possible graveyard (SL040-050002-). The ruins of a rectangular structure (int. 8.5m NW-SE; 5m SW-NE) are situated in an area covered by scrub overgrowth. Only fragments of wall-facing survive (uncoursed limestone; T 0.6m) and most of the walling is of loose drystone construction. No feature of this is consistent with that of a church though it appears to be the structure named 'Monastery (in Ruins)' on the 1914 OS 6-inch map. There is no known record of a monastic foundation here (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 365).
