Moel Llansawel rises to approximately 230 metres and is part of the undulating landscape of the South Wales Valleys. It lies within the geologically diverse region of the Welsh Coalfield, shaped by Carboniferous limestone and later glacial activity. The hill matters locally as a subtle but identifiable landmark in the Neath Port Talbot area.
