Moated site in Ballinurra

Moated site

What is recorded here

On a gradual N-facing slope in Slievenamon valley, under pasture though the ground to the N is marshy. Identified on an aerial photograph taken in 1973 (GSI S.512/13). A roughly square enclosure (48m N-S; 50m E-W) defined on the N, E and W sides by scarp (H 0.9m) with traces of a flattened bank (Wth 10.6m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6m) at the N and S ends of the E side and on the S side by a band of lush grass (Wth c. 7m) which probably indicates the presence of a fosse. A field drain runs N-S through the S half of the moated site and another runs N-S at the base of the scarp on the W side. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
