Moat in Wolfestown

What is recorded here

Shown on the latest ed. (1913-17) of the OS 6-inch map as a raised circular area (est. diam. c. 40m) enclosed by an outer bank from NNW-ENE and from S-WNW (est. ext. diam. c. 70m NE-SW. In 1972, there was no visible trace of these features and the area was a flat-topped hill (SMR file). The site and surrounding ground, especially to the S, are visible as having been extensively quarried on a 2000 aerial photograph (OSi Orthophoto).

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

Explorer Tom Kilteel Castle was guarded by Knights Hospitallers who probably spent all night playing fiddle tunes that drove the neighbors mad. It sits on a terrace watching the stream go by, judging your life choices. Have a chat with it, nobody's watching.
