Moatfarrell stands upon a grassy motte in County Longford, where a collapsed stone building may still mark an O’Farrell castle from the 16th century. In 1605 Mary, lady Delvin, and her son sir Richard Nugent received the castle and five cartrons from the King, taking the place from Rossey O’Farroll. The grant suggests a handover of power rather than a new build, leaving the stones behind as a quiet witness to displaced ownership.

Upon the summit of the motte and bailey (LF014-050----). The grass-covered remains of a collapsed stone building may be the remains of an O’Farrell castle of 16th century date. In 1605 Mary, lady Delvin, widow of lord Christopher, and her son sir Richard Nugent, baron of Delvin received a grant of land from the King including ‘the castle of the Moate, and 5 cartrons there; parcel of the estate of Rossey O’Farroll; valued at 13s 4d Ir. The Moat & Castle at Moatfarrell may have been built by the O’Farrell family in the 16th century and later associated with Mary, Lady Delvin, widow of Lord Cholmondeley, in 1605. It is remembered as a possible family stronghold in a region of historical Gaelic influence.
