Single-arch footbridge spanning chasm, built 1909, accessing Mizen Head Signal Station. Reinforced concrete construction comprising parabolic arch supporting deck of bridge.

The construction of this unusual and dramatically sited bridge was crucially important for the establishment and operation of Mizen Head Signal Station. Built by Messrs Thorne & Sons of Westminster, to a design by Noel Ridley, this innovative structure cost £1,272. Pre-cast elements were manufactures on site and lifted into place. Reinforced concrete was not used in Ireland in its modern form until the last decade of the nineteenth century. Spanning a deep inlet, its dramatic siting has undermined its structure. After one hundred years in this exposed maritime environment, it is currently in need of stabilising works. It is one of the most innovative engineering structures to be found in Ireland.
