Milton Keynes Museum is a place where the new city's older neighbours get to tell their side of the story. Set in the Victorian farm buildings at Stacey Hill, it lets you move from rural tools and local industry to a street of shops, hands-on displays, and the famous concrete cows that arrived much later. Local people founded the museum in 1973, only a few years after the decision to build Milton Keynes, because farms and workplaces were vanishing as the city grew. They collected objects from northern Buckinghamshire and southern Northamptonshire and made the former farmstead their home. The museum's rooms and outdoor spaces follow work, home life, and communication across generations. Its volunteers encourage visitors to handle many objects where it is safe, which makes the place feel more like a shared memory than a store of untouchable things. The museum is off McConnell Drive in Wolverton. Its current visitor page lists Wednesday to Sunday opening and extra days during local school half terms and bank holidays; winter hours can differ, so check the date before setting off. Tickets can be booked online or bought on arrival, and parking is provided. This is a museum with both indoor and outdoor areas, so leave enough time to wander the farm buildings as well as the galleries. I reckon the concrete cows have been demanding a speaking part in every exhibition since they arrived, but the curators keep pointing out that concrete is famously poor at interviews. That is my tall tale. The real voices here belong to the people who saved ordinary objects before a new city could sweep them aside.
