The Mill in Kilmacow still offers a grand round-headed carriage entrance, though most of the roofs have collapsed. It’s the country-house welcome taken to extremes: ‘Come in, come in! Will you sit outside or outside?’
Corn mill complex, c.1825, comprising:(i) Detached seven-bay two-storey corn mill on an L-shaped plan with round-headed carriageway to left ground floor, and two-bay single-storey projecting bay to right. Random rubble stone walls with remains of unpainted lime render over. Square-headed window openings with no sills, timber lintels, and remains of timber fittings. Square-headed door openings with timber lintels, and remains of timber fittings. Round-headed carriageway to left ground floor with cut-limestone voussoirs, and no fittings. Set back from road with unkempt forecourt having mill race.(ii) Single-arch rubble stone footbridge over mill race. Random rubble stone parapets with squared rubble stone coping. Single camber arch with cut-stone voussoirs, and rubble stone soffits. Set back from road spanning mill race with rubble stone retaining walls to mill race.(iii) Detached three-bay two-storey over basement mill owner's house. Part refenestrated, c.1925. Subsequently in use as Garda Síochána station. Now in ruins. Hipped roof now gone with rendered chimney stacks, and no rainwater goods surviving on eaves. Unpainted rendered walls over random rubble stone construction. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, concealed red brick block-and-start surrounds having voussoirs, and remains of six-over-six timber sash windows having replacement four-over-four timber sash windows, c.1925, to rear (north-west) elevation. Square-headed door opening in elliptical-headed recess (now boarded-up). Set back from line of road with overgrown forecourt.
A collection of modest-scale ranges forming an important element of the industrial heritage of Kilmacow having operated as a corn mill from the early nineteenth century. Although now in ruins the elementary form and massing of each range remain substantially intact, thereby providing an indication of the original appearance of the complex. The site at present forms a picturesque feature of some Romantic quality in the landscape.
