Detached four-bay three-storey flour mill, c.1825, on an L-shaped plan with single-bay three-storey gabled projecting end bay to right having three-bay single-storey mono-pitched infill range to corner. In use as corn mill, 1903. Now disused and partly derelict. Pitched slate roof on an L-shaped plan (forming hip to corner; mono-pitched to infill range) with terracotta ridge tiles, gabled vent to apex having louvered panels, and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Unpainted rendered walls over random rubble limestone construction. Square-headed window openings with no sills, concealed dressings including timber lintels, and fixed-pane timber windows. Square-headed door opening with concealed dressings, and fittings now missing. Set in own grounds on bank of Black Water River with traces of mill race to site.
Having supported the local agricultural economy since the early nineteenth century a middle-size mill building represents an important element of the industrial legacy of County Kilkenny. Despite having fallen into disrepair following decommissioning in the twentieth century the elementary composition attributes survive substantially intact together with much of the historic fabric, thereby maintaining some of the integrity of the site. Positioned overlooking the Black Water River the mill remains an appealing landmark enhancing the aesthetic value of the local landscape.

Explorer Tom Greenville Mill was built on a bargain where the contractor promised free flour for life, which he never honored. It’s an extensive aqueduct that used to feed a flour mill complex now mostly gone. Great spot to propose. Or at least try.

Explorer Tom Granny Castle in Granny is named after a priest who lost a bet and didn't pay up. He still blames the tower house for his bad luck, which is rich. Stand there long enough and someone will ask if you're lost.

Explorer Tom Bawn in Granny is just a wall that thinks it's the main event. Saint Patrick would have called it a fence with delusions of grandeur, honestly. If it's closed, admire it from the road like a polite stalker.

Explorer Tom Gaulstown Dolmen is stuck in a fairy dispute over parking rights for its massive roofstone. It’s facing the hillside like it’s eavesdropping on the next ridge’s gossip. Dare you to say hello to it out loud.

Gaulstown Portal TombArchaeological place · 8.7 mi

Explorer Tom Gaulstown Portal Tomb has a family tree that is ninety percent invented by my uncle, who also claims he knows the king. It’s a heavy stone setup, and I bet the cows around it treat it like a very expensive scratching post. Wave at the cows, they're the real locals.
