What is recorded here
Freestanding cut limestone milestone on rectangular plan , erected c.1780, with carved inscriptions 'Dublin 60', 'Moate 7' and 'Ballinasloe 12' engraved on appropriate faces. Benchmark incised to top, c.1830. Located on a footpath on the main approach road into Athlone from the east.
This milestone makes an attractive, if subtle, impression in the streetscape. Milestones were frequently placed along the sides of turnpike roads in the late eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries and are an important historical reminder of the great coaching era and of the work of the Grand Juries in Ireland.
