Midden in Inishgort

At the SW end of Inishgort island. Recorded by Mr. M. Gibbons, this well-defined midden (L c. 8; D 0.3m) is exposed in a jagged section of the ground c. 7m to the SSW of a cashel (GA009D047001-); a storm beach lies immediately to the S. The midden is visible just below the thin sod cover and it rests on underlying boulder clay. It is largely composed of limpet shells with smaller amounts of periwinkles. Numerous fire-cracked stones and white quartz stones are interspersed within it. The midden may predate the cashel. Two fragments of worked mudstone resembling shale axes were found, out of context, in an area of debris on the edge of the storm beach. The following image has been uploaded courtesy of Mr. M.
