Midden in Clooney (maas Ed)

Midden

What is recorded here

Midden in Clooney (maas Ed) is an extensive midden in the Naran sand-hills, County Donegal, Ireland, where bones, slag and fire-cracked stones still mark repeated human use. Graves or cists with extended corpses have also been reported nearby, suggesting that daily discard and death itself shared the same landscape. The place may have been a working coast, a seasonal kitchen or a remembered burial ground, but its debris makes one thing plain: people kept returning there.
A number of finds of extensive areas of midden material have been made in the Naran sand-hills (Knowles, 1901, 343-45; Brunicardi 1914, 196; McGill 1947, 29) Graves or cists with extended corpses have also been reported in this area (Knowles 1901, 343-45; McNulty 1896, 382-3). Scatters of debris comprising of bones, slag, and fire-cracked stones were observed during the course of the survey. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
