Midden in Baile An Easa

Numerous bronze pins as well as a variety of stone tools have been found among the sandhills close to Ballyness Pier (UJA 1858, 351-3; Knowles 1901, 34.8; Brunicardi 1914, 195). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Site visited and surveyed by Martin Byrne on the 30 April 2009. Remains are in soil profile towards base of sloping ground/ former sand dune; Public road to north and east leading to pier. Boundary fence on top of soil profile with access to lands to south to immediate east. Access to site is via a gate fronting onto road. Remains comprise a c. 200mm thick layer (as exposed) of mixed shells extending west for a distance of c. 1m; covered by a layer of sand (c. 100 - 150mm) over which is a layer of peaty soil (c. 300mm average thickness). Land slopes down to immediate north and east and there is a dispersed spread of shells extending over an area of c. 3m to front (north) of remains(pers. comm. M. Byrne 2009-).
