Drumnatinny Beach faces north into the Atlantic with the look of a place that has never asked the sea to lower its voice. I arrived near Falcarragh expecting a stretch of sand and got a long lesson in wind, headlands and the shape of Ballyness Bay. It is beautiful precisely because it keeps its rough edges rather than dressing them up for visitors. The strand runs between Ballyness Bay to the west and Crockagarran with smaller headlands to the east. Donegal's visitor description calls it a long sandy beach with a strong Atlantic wash. Take a moment to locate both ends before setting out; the broad middle can make the distance back feel shorter than it is. The meeting of bay and open ocean gives the shore a changeable character. At low water there may be more sand to explore, but the tide will not wait for anyone busy composing a grand speech to the horizon. Drumnatinny belongs to a quieter set of Donegal beaches, where the absence of heavy development is part of the visit. A walk here asks you to notice small changes in sand, water and light rather than tick off a row of amusements. I once claimed I could tell the day's weather by asking a passing gull. The gull flew off, the wind picked up and I decided a proper forecast was the cleverer companion. Bring a camera if you like, but let yourself spend a few minutes without it. The openness is the attraction. For 2026, Drumnatinny holds a Green Coast award. That recognises excellent bathing-water quality and care for a more natural rural shore, not a promise of lifeguards or safe swimming in every condition. Its north-facing exposure and rough sea are reasons to check the public water report and any local warnings before entering. Walking, beachcombing and watching the Atlantic are satisfying choices in their own right. Stay clear of unstable dune edges, leave wildlife undisturbed and take litter home so the award has a real landscape behind it. The public beach record marks Drumnatinny near Falcarragh, and Donegal's visitor listing says access is free throughout the day. Use the established route onto the sand and avoid blocking local roads when parking. Services can be sparse on a rural coast, particularly outside summer, so carry water, warm clothing and a plan for the return. In late October, do not rely on seasonal bathing supervision. A clear forecast at the car does not guarantee comfort at the exposed waterline, so be ready to shorten the walk. Walk as far as suits the weather, then turn and watch how the bay and headlands rearrange themselves on the way back. Drumnatinny rewards a second look.
