Midden in An Ghlaise Bheag

Midden

What is recorded here

Midden in An Ghlaise Bheag marks a lost kitchen on the E cliff of Smerwick Harbour, where shells still show through rock. Nobody can reach them now, so the place keeps its own secret: a hand tossed food away, the sea took the rest, and the cliff waited patient for someone to look up.
There appear to be a small number of shells high up in the cliff-face, on the E side of Smerwick Harbour. However, access to the site is impossible and it could not be examined closely. (information: A. McCarthy) The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 14. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013
