Metalworking site in Cloonown

Metalworking site

What is recorded here

Archaeological testing (11E0360) uncovered evidence of metalworking c. 50m outside the line of the ecclesiastical enclosure (RO055-003005-) at Cloonown, to the NW. It consisted of three areas of intense buring in a confined area of c. 8m x 8m, with iron slag and a piece of copper alloy. A ditch (Wth 2.5m; D c. 0.8m) was uncovered (L 43m plus) running NW-SE parallel with the publc road just to the W, but the ditch turns N to avoid the metalworking area.
