What is recorded here

Excavated (98E0575) as part of Area 16 of the N25 Kilmacthomas re-alignment. Six ironworking hearths (dims. 0.8m x 0.65m; D 0.15m to 1.15m x 0.96m; D 0.22m) which were cut or burned into the ground in a confined area (dims. c. 6m x c. 5m) were excavated. The hearths contained layers of charcoal and slag. There were no artefacts, but charcoal from one of the hearths produced a C14 determination of cal. AD 660-990. The kiln (WA015-106004-) was c. 4m SW of the hearths. The late medieval iron-working site (WA015-106005-) is c. 25m to the ESE. (Tierney and Elliot 2008) Compiled by: Michael Moore.
