Mearing Island

Mearing Island is a small islet in Lough Carra, County Mayo, where “mearing” suggests a boundary marker rather than an ordinary place name. The lough’s pale marl water, low limestone shores and long history of island settlement make the area feel old and inhabited, even when the island itself remains quiet. A boat approaching from the eastern shore would have seen it as a point of reference, a edge or limit made visible in the water.
