Maurice Neligan, born in Booterstown in 1937, became Ireland's first heart-transplant surgeon and a national celebrity for performing thousands of operations without state support. He met his wife Pat when she crashed her father's car outside St Vincent's Hospital on graduation day, and he followed her on crutches to ask her out. Their marriage produced seven children, and his death in 2010 prompted Enda Kenny to call him the first superstar of Irish medicine.
