Castle

Situated on the present site of a late 18th century house at the junction of Pembroke Cottages and Booterstown Avenue near Booterstown marsh. Named on the OS 1843 edition as 'Booterstown Cas'. Booterstown Castle was built in the first half of the 15thcentury by the Fitzwilliam family on the site of acastle. According to the Patent Rolls (13 Hen VI) Philip Fitzwilliam petitioned the king to provide funds to fortify a castle which had been destroyed in the beginning of the 15th-century (Ball 1900, 310). In the early 17th century it was held by Sir William Ryves, Attorney General and in 1619 after the Restoration the castle was occupied by a family called Reyly. Vaults belonging to the 15th century, are said to have been incorporated into a house that occupies the site. No visible surface trace. Booterstown Castle was likely built in the late 16th or early 17th century by a local Anglo-Irish landowning family, though specific builders remain unidentified. It is remembered as an example of early defensive tower house architecture in the region, later incorporated into or replaced by a more substantial house in the late 18th century.
