What is recorded here

According to local tradition, there was a mass rock in Tavraun townland. It was listed in the RMP (1997) at this location based on information from a local source. No trace of the mass rock was found during an inspection in November 2016 (pers. comm. G. Walsh 2016). Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 June 2021
A mass rock was used in Tavraun as a secret site for Catholic worship during periods of religious persecution in Ireland, particularly under anti-Catholic laws in the 17th and 18th centuries. Such sites were often discreetly marked and protected by local communities.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
