Mass-rock in Garranes South

Mass-rock

What is recorded here

Flat-topped boulder locally known as "mass rock", now lying in field fence (CO119-127----). Removed from original position on site of fulacht fiadh (CO119-089001-) during reclamation work. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 16 December 2009
Mass-rock in Garranes South is associated with the tradition of secret Catholic worship during the Penal Times, when holding Mass was illegal. The site's connection to a fulacht fiadh suggests a long history of ritual or spiritual use, potentially stretching back to pre-Christian times.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
