Margaret Ritchie

Margaret Ritchie was born in Downpatrick on 25 March 1958, the small Northern Irish town that later gave her title as Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick. She grew from local council work into Assembly leadership, Social Development minister, and MP for South Down before joining the House of Lords as a life peer in 2019. Her life turned a familiar Downpatrick name into a British political identity, carrying one woman from local rooms into national power.
