What is recorded here
Cathedral Hill in Downpatrick layers a prehistoric settlement, an early Christian monastery, a Benedictine monastery and a graveyard beneath one ridge, proving that the town has kept returning to the same ground for millennia. The Dál Fiatach made the place a royal centre, while later worshippers buried their dead beside the cliff edge where Saint Patrick is said to rest. People may have first chosen the drumlin because water surrounded it like a moat, giving the ridge both danger and protection. Every new church built above the older marks is an act of memory, forcing the living to acknowledge the hands that dug before them.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as DOWNPATRICK TOWN CROSS; BENEDICTINE MONASTERY; MULTIPERIOD CHURCH SITE; PRE-HISTORIC SETTLEMENT SITE; EARTHWORKS & GRAVEYARD: CATHEDRAL HILL.
