What is recorded here
St. Margaret’s church and castle stand in ruins within the Demesne of Down at Downpatrick, a medieval and post-medieval site where worship and defence once shared one foundation. The remains suggest a place of power, perhaps a lord’s hall beside an altar, where prayer and guard duty blended under one roof. What is left refuses easy explanation, holding both the sacred and the armed in the same ground.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as CHURCH & CASTLE (remains of): ST. MARGARET'S. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL; POST-MED. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
