Man-made underground passage (Site of)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

West of Kilpatrick Church in County Louth, a buried passage once twisted through two chambers or four meeting roads, depending on which memory you trust. People built it deliberately, perhaps to hide, pray or exclude others from the dark. The entrance has vanished, leaving behind a hollow suspicion that the ground still holds a room nobody enters.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated to W of site of Kilpatrick Church (LH017-050----). The Man-made underground passage consisted of two chambers according to Mac Iomhair (CLAJ 1944, 328-9), though local information states that the Man-made underground passage consisted of 'four passages meeting at a crossroads'. Now inaccessible.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
