Underground passage in a ringfort at County Cork, Ireland. The earth-cut tunnel is blocked and cannot be entered, but two flat stones still mark its edge. The chamber may have hidden people, goods or memory when the land above was busy.
In ringfort (CO070-008001-). Hollow (L 1m; Wth 1m; D 0.6m) in NE quadrant reveals earth-cut passage; inaccessible. In SE quadrant, two flat stones exposed at ground level may be associated. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 5/1990).
