Ballyhoulahan III holds a rectangular wound in its southern rampart, twenty-one feet long and twelve wide but only four deep. Bowman called it the ghost of an underground passage, yet the shallow dimensions suggest a collapsed tunnel or abandoned cache rather than a grand subterranean hall. The earth swallowed the structure while preserving its outline, forcing later visitors to imagine what disappeared beneath the soil.

In SE quadrant of ringfort (CO022-12901-). Bowman (1934, 493) noted that 'in the South part of the inner rampart is a hole 21 ft. by 12, by 4ft. deep.This is the site of a Man-made underground passage' . This hole is still visible. Also recorded by McCarthy (1977, 333, Ballyhoulahan III). Possible Man-made underground passage (CO022-181---) in adjoining field.
