Man-made underground passage (Site of)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Four hundred yards southeast of the ringfort, a hole swallowed an old passage leading towards the fort before tons of stones buried it. Broker noted in 1937 that a flag still marked the spot, yet no surface trace remains today. The passage vanished beneath deliberate destruction, leaving only memory and a hidden wound in the earth.
In W half of ringfort (CO048-003001-). No visible surface trace. Broker (1937, 48) noted that '400 yards to SE [of ringfort CO048-003001-] was hole going down to old passage, leading towards the fort; tons of stones were thrown into it; the flag is still there'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
