Snakes and men both want the hole. That is why the old road still smells of rain and certainty. The chamber is small enough to touch on every side. It is also wide enough for a cart, a child or a god. The ceiling is flat in places and round in others. That means more than one hand touched it. Some part was dug in a hurry. Some part was cut patiently. A lantern would have shown the difference at once. The chamber is not a mistake. It is a room built under a town that has forgotten the name of the person who made it.
