Closed now, but once a seven-foot stone-covered slope dropped into two earth-cut chambers beneath the northern half of a Cork ringfort. People crawled through narrow passages, touched damp walls, and emerged into ovation rooms large enough to stand in. The collapsed opening at the rear suggests more chambers waited beyond, preserving the shape of a hidden place that no longer answers.
In N half of ringfort (CO060-121001-). Described by Gillman (1896b, 417-20) as two ovoid earth-cut chambers and stone-built entrance passage. Short slope from ringfort interior to entrance (2ft x 2ft). Passage (L 7ft) sloping downwards to SE, covered by two stone slabs. Earth-cut creepway from passage to chamber 1: (L 10ft 6in; Wth 4ft 6in; H 3ft 7in; long axis E-W). Creepway at NE corner to S corner of chamber 2 (long axis WNW-ESE), which is of similar dimensions to chamber 1. Opening at SW corner of chamber 1 reveals collapsed passage presumably to further chamber(s). McCarthy (1977, 265) interpreted stone slab at NW corner of chamber 1 and on SW side of chamber 2 as possibly 'facings to a construction pit'. Entrance to Man-made underground passage now closed.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
