Man-made underground passage in Ummera (muskerry East By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Two chambered passages, ten metres apart, still show their entrances in Ummera. Hartnett recorded them in 1939 as excavated underground rooms that collapsed inside, denying later entry. They remain visible but closed, preserving the shape of human labour rather than inviting it into their dark.
Two entrances to Man-made underground passages (c. 10m apart) recorded by Hartnett (1939, 108), who noted that chambers are 'excavated in the sub-soil and have collapsed internally thus making them impossible to examine'. Openings still visible; inaccessible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
