Man-made underground passage in Teerelton

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Four earth-cut chambers and narrow creepways appeared in a Teerelton farm garden, perhaps belonging to an older hidden settlement. The entrance is now blocked, but the chambers may still wait beneath the soil. They sit close to a possible ringfort, suggesting the farm has stood above more life than it knows.
In garden of farmhouse. Discovered c. 1965. According to local information, four earth-cut chambers joined by narrow creepways. Entrance now blocked. Possible ringfort (CO082-033001-) c. 50m to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
