Carrignaneelagh castle rose on the rough grazing shelf at the foot of Kilbarry Hill, built by the O Leary clan no earlier than the 1570s. Local tradition holds that its stones were stripped to build nearby Kilbarry House in the early 19th century, erasing the fortress from the land. What remained was a ghost in the grass, its walls reborn as rooms for someone else.

No visible surface trace of castle built by O Leary clan (Healy 1988, 35); according to local tradition, stones from castle used in constructing nearby Kilbarry House in early 19th century. According to O Murchadha (1993, 239), documentary sources suggest castle here 'not built before the 1570s'.
