Man-made underground passage in Shangarry

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Shangarry is not a ghost story about a woman lost in rock. It is a man-made underground passage, an L-shaped cut inside a rath, with one long chamber running north-south and a shorter chamber leaving its south-west end to run east-west. The interesting part is the shape: a doorway, a turn, and a second room. That is the kind of place where people would have carried fire, hidden things, or moved through darkness without being seen.
Within the SSW sector of the interior of a rath (GA106-150----). An L-shaped hollow (D 1.3m) may mark the site of a collapsed Man-made underground passage. The long axis (L 10.1m; Wth 3.6m) runs N-S and the short axis (L 9.9m; Wth 4.5m) extends from its SW end and runs E-W. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 12 April 2018
