Man-made underground passage in Raffeen

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Two hollows on the west side of a possible ringfort in Raffeen hinted at underground passages before quarrying destroyed the site. O'Leary noted them in 1919, but the ground has forgotten its own shape. What remains is only the absence of a hole, a phantom tunnel buried under progress and silence.
In possible ringfort (CO087-034---). According to O'Leary (1919, 34) 'two hollows on the west side of the lios point to the existence of Man-made underground passages'. Site now destroyed due to quarrying. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
