Man-made underground passage in Oldcastle

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Underground in Oldcastle, a man-made passage pierced the ringfort until closure. Whether it stored grain, hid people or simply drained rainwater remains unclear. The fort still stands above the hidden hole, preserving the shape of a choice nobody recorded.
In ringfort (CO061-100001-). Hartnett (1939, 274) mentioned that 'this fort had a "cave" but it has been closed'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
