Man-made underground passage in Moskeagh

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under the Moskeagh ringfort, a man-made passage disappears from sight, leaving no surface trace to mark its entrance. The hidden tunnel may have served as a refuge, a storage hole, or a forgotten route through the ancient earth. Whatever its purpose, the passage still holds its shape beneath the grass, waiting for someone careful enough to find the seam where human hands bent the ground.
Local report of Man-made underground passage in ringfort (CO096-00701-). No vivible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
