What is recorded here
Lackabane in Muskerry East By. held a man-made cavern beside the church, recorded in an 1896 quarry but closed before anyone could inspect it. The passage vanished without a surface trace, leaving behind a hollow gap in the local story rather than a hole in the ground.
Quarry (1896, 384) mentioned 'cavern' opened in area adjacent to church (CO050-102003-) but closed prior to inspection. No visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
