Man-made underground passage in Kilpadder South

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Kilpadder South ringfort hid a man-made underground passage in its south-east corner, yet no visible surface trace remains. Bowman noted the site in 1934, preserving the shape of what disappearance erased. The passage may have served as a cellar, refuge or ritual path, but the earth has taken back its evidence.
In ringfort (CO041-07101-). According to Bowman (1934, 559), 'site of Man-made underground passage in S.E. corner'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
